How to Make a Sublimation Shirt at Home — Beginner Guide

Sublimation shirts are one of the most popular products in the custom apparel market — full-color, photo-quality designs that are permanently bonded into the fabric, never crack, peel, or fade, and look like they came from a professional print shop. The good news is that making sublimation shirts at home is genuinely achievable for beginners with the right equipment, the right blanks, and the right designs. This guide walks you through how to make a sublimation shirt at home from start to finish — equipment, shirt selection, printing, pressing, and the designs that sell best.

What You Need to Make Sublimation Shirts at Home

Before you press your first shirt, you need the right setup. Sublimation is a heat-activated process where ink turns to gas and bonds permanently with polyester fibers — which means your equipment and your blanks both matter.

Equipment

  • Sublimation printer — the most popular beginner options are the Epson EcoTank ET-2800 or ET-15000 (converted with sublimation ink) or a dedicated sublimation printer like the Sawgrass SG500. Do not use a regular inkjet printer — sublimation requires sublimation-specific ink.
  • Sublimation ink — if you’re converting an Epson EcoTank, use a reputable sublimation ink brand (Hiipoo and Cosmos Ink are popular beginner choices). If you buy a Sawgrass printer, it comes with Sawgrass SubliJet ink.
  • Heat press — a flat heat press (15x15” is the most versatile size for shirts) is the most reliable option. A household iron does not provide consistent enough heat and pressure for sublimation shirts.
  • Sublimation paper — use sublimation-specific transfer paper, not regular printer paper. A-SUB and Hiipoo are popular beginner brands.
  • Heat-resistant tape — to secure your transfer to the shirt before pressing.
  • Butcher paper or parchment paper — to protect your heat press platen and prevent ghosting.

Shirts (Blanks)

This is the most important variable for beginners: sublimation only works on polyester or polyester-blend fabrics. The higher the polyester content, the more vibrant and permanent the result.

  • 100% polyester shirts — the best results; colors are vivid and permanent. Great for athletic wear, performance shirts, and youth shirts.
  • 50/50 poly-cotton blends — produce a vintage, slightly faded look that many buyers love. Works well for fashion tees.
  • 100% cotton shirts — sublimation does not bond well to cotton without special coating. If you want to sublimate on cotton, read our full guide: How to Sublimate on Cotton Shirts (Even 100% Cotton!)
  • White or light-colored shirts only — sublimation ink is transparent, so it only works on white or very light-colored blanks. Dark shirts require a different process (HTV or DTF).

Step-by-Step: How to Make a Sublimation Shirt

Step 1 — Choose and Prepare Your Design

Download your design from QuickDigitalFiles.com as a PNG file with a transparent background. Open it in your design software (Canva, Photoshop, or your printer’s RIP software) and size it for your shirt:

  • Adult shirt front (full chest) — 10–12” wide
  • Adult shirt front (left chest) — 3.5–4” wide
  • Youth shirt front — 7–9” wide

Mirror your design before printing. This is the most common beginner mistake — sublimation transfers are applied face-down, so your design must be flipped horizontally before you print it.

Step 2 — Print Your Design

Print your mirrored design on sublimation paper using your sublimation printer. Use the highest quality print setting and make sure your printer is set to the correct paper type. Let the print dry for 60 seconds before handling — sublimation ink smears easily when wet.

Step 3 — Pre-Press Your Shirt

Place your shirt on the heat press platen and pre-press for 5–8 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. Moisture is the enemy of sublimation — any moisture in the fabric during pressing will cause uneven color transfer. Pre-pressing eliminates this.

Step 4 — Position and Tape Your Transfer

Place your printed sublimation transfer face-down on the shirt in the desired position. Use heat-resistant tape to secure all four edges of the transfer to the shirt. Any movement during pressing causes ghosting — a blurry double-image that ruins the print.

Step 5 — Press

Close your heat press and press at the following settings (adjust based on your specific press and blanks):

  • Temperature: 385–400°F (195–205°C)
  • Time: 45–60 seconds
  • Pressure: Medium-firm

Place a sheet of butcher paper or parchment paper between the transfer and the platen to protect your press from any ink bleed.

Step 6 — Peel and Reveal

Open the press and immediately peel the sublimation paper while the shirt is still hot — this is called a “hot peel” and produces the sharpest results for most sublimation transfers. Peel slowly and evenly from one corner. Your design is now permanently bonded into the fabric — it will not crack, peel, or wash out.

Common Sublimation Shirt Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Forgot to mirror — always mirror your design before printing; if your text comes out backwards, this is why
  • Used a cotton shirt — sublimation requires polyester; on 100% cotton the design will wash out almost immediately
  • Moisture in the shirt — always pre-press your shirt for 5–8 seconds to remove moisture before applying your transfer
  • Design shifted during pressing — tape all four edges of your transfer securely; any movement causes ghosting
  • Temperature too low — if your colors look dull or washed out, increase your temperature by 5–10 degrees and test again
  • Peeled too slowly — for most sublimation transfers, peel immediately while hot for the sharpest results
  • Used PNG without transparent background — a white background on your PNG will transfer as a white box on your shirt; always use transparent background PNGs
